Charlotte County’s oldest and most prestigious annual juried fine art exhibit, this will be the 22nd year for the Harvest of Art.
 
I found out this morning I was juried in to this fine art exhibit with my new piece,”Harvested”. It is my hand dyed silk with 5 mm copper sewn on top.  
 
The REALLY KOOL thing is that the reception for this fine art exhibit is the same night, basically the same time and the same place as my “Landscapes in Art Exhibit.”, just two different VAC galleries.    Thursday, Novmeber 4th, 6 – 8 pm.   
Plus you can see our 50 year celebration pieces for the VAC (can you believe we’ve had the Vis Arts for 50 years?) of “Mike vs LEO” replicas of Michaelangelo’s and Davinci’s works, even a life sized David.

Cheer for me in the Inaugural exhibit at the Florida Women’s Museum in DeLand.   What a gorgeous place, I am so pleased I got in. 

Peggy also got into the Quilt National and sold a work at Houston in the major SAQA exhibition!  Go Peggy Go!!!

Mud Cookies by Patricia Anderson Turner

Tonight I attended “critique night” at The Art Center Sarasota where OUR Patricia Anderson Turner was awarded first place for her work “Mud Cookies”. As most all of you have seen this work and know Patricia I thought you might benefit from hearing what the judges had to say about it.

There were more ran 350 works offered for judging and the judges, two men, were art academics. They were teachers, art historians, one man was a sculptor the other used to write a monthly article for some art mag, can’t recall now which one, but what I’m working to illustrate here is that they were not schmoes.

The call for entry titled “Fiber Of Our Being” is an all media, juried exhibit open to all residents of the state, in this case, Florida.  The final selection came down to 150 pieces and included such works as tiny sculptures of cockroaches formed from I don’t wanna know what kind of twigs, some black and white Ansel Adams”ish” photography, watercolor renderings of family reunions and then there was this knitted wrap that was just spectacular.  I wanna buy it but I won’t, I’ll explain why at a later time.

Anyway, the audience, composed of artists whose work had or had not been “accepted”, was an open discussion on how these judges chose the works they did.  Much of the audience seem “concerned” (yes, concerned) with the, and I quote “amount of fiber juried into the exhibit” unquote.  Ladies, there wasn’t that much fiber there!!!  AND, the fiber that was there belonged there.

First place was Patricia’s Mud Cookies, second was an oil painting that was very well done, and third place was the wrap I mentioned earlier.  I hope someone buys it before opening night, so I don’t have to.

The anonymity of the subject was appealing, they mentioned this several times
       (perhaps I should draw Chicken with his head cut off)*
The subject matter, hunger, is compelling and contemporary, speaks to the moment – he actually said that “speaks to the moment”, that was my favorite comment

Extremely impressive  (extremely impressive)!   How cool is that!

It was a good night and a great learning experience for me.    I did have two Joan’s accepted into the show, and was pleased to have several guests comment positively about my work.

Theme: Volusia Wrapped in Fiber

Volusia County was the first area in Central Florida to exhibit art quilts as fine art. The area has become a site for many fiber gatherings and exhibitions. This program will introduce other venues to the fiber arts and exhibit the creative growth in the fiber arts. Artists are expected to create and display their innovative works featuring textile techniques with unusual materials or common  materials used in unique ways. There are a total of five venues but only two featuring Studio Art Quilt Associates and Surface Design Associates.

Juror: Pamela Allen is a well known fiber artist and teacher from of Kingston, Ontario in Canada. She received an BFA from QUEENS UNIVERSITY, KINGSTON.   A non-traditional artist, before she became a quilt artist, she worked in painting, assemblage, printing and other forms of art.  Her works are exhibited world-wide in galleries and museums.  Allen is a member of both groups.

Curators:  Mary McBride graduated from Stetson University, DeLand, FL, with a BA in art and a minor in art history. She has been an exhibiting sculptor for years and turned to fiber arts six years ago. Her work has traveled internationally and been published in books and magazines. Since retiring from Atlantic Center for the Arts as the Harris House Community Programs Manager, she volunteers and works at several area galleries as curator. McBride is the Florida Representative for 100 SAQA artists.

Judy Gilmer paints, sculpts and teaches art to children and adults in Volusia County. Her works hang in galleries from Miami to Ashville, NC.  She recently developed programs to teach fiber artists how to expand their skills in design and to take their work into the abstract. Gilmer works with McBride as a curator for local galleries.

Projected number of pieces:  approximately 250 pieces of fiber art

Eligibility and Guidelines:
• Entry is by digital images only (directions below).
• You may submit up to 3 entries.
• Entries must be a minimum of 8” per side.  There is no maximum width or height as both galleries have high ceilings and wide wall spans.
• 3-D, free-standing works WILL be accepted in both galleries.
• With the addition of Surface Design Artists, the restrictions on art quilts are suspended. This is an anything goes adventure into fibers.

• Artwork may be published in a catalog of the exhibition if sponsorship is found.

• Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance to selected venue.

SAQA will arrange to insure the artwork during the exhibition and will cover return shipping, including insurance, to the artists if enough artists apply to make this affordable.  Otherwise, artists will have to pay their own return shipping.

• Artwork MAY be for sale. SAQA will charge a 25% commission on all sales; exhibiting venues will also charge a 25% commission.
